Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time movie debuted almost a decade ago, and still the fans wonder whether Prince Of Persia 2 will ever happen. Mike Newell directed the film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton. It surprised its fans with its British accent that brought a fun element to the movie. Yet, the film was highly accused of white-washing despite its incredible performance. Prince Of Persia is based on the famous Ubisoft video game franchise of the same title.
The video game is a side-scrolling adventure that has mainly appeared on every gaming platform since 1989. Prince Of Persia was optimistically considered in 2010 as the beginning of a new Disney franchise, similar to Pirates Of The Caribbean that earned around $4.5 billion globally. Even the makers placed an exclusive ad at the Superbowl to promote Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time. If this was the case, why Disney and the creators took a decade to come up with a Prince Of Persia sequel? Let’s see!
Prince Of Persia 2: Has Disney Looking For A Sequel?
Disney hasn’t yet officially order the sequel of its 2010 release Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time. However, the movie was based on the Unisoft video, which is now launching Prince Of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, the direct sequel to the film. So, we can assume that probably the studios would come up with its sequel. But, it’s quite uncertain now considering the rating and popularity it received.
Reasons Behind Prince Of Persia 2 Delay
Debut Movie Received Poor Reviews
Prince Of Persia didn’t receive a good response from the critics. It currently holds a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience responded slightly better as they gave a 58% generous rating to the movie. So, with those stats, the film might not come with a sequel. But it doesn’t mean that the sequel would be like the first one. However, it looks like the studio has less faith in the movie financially.
Movie No Financial Success
Although the movie adapted from the highest-grossing video game and assumed to be similar back in 2010. However, the film ended up with only $336 million globally, lurching ahead of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the previous box office hit. Sadly, the movie has been ousted by plenty of films, including Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and Sonic The Hedgehog.
But the major issue includes Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time was the capital cost, $200 million to produce the adventurous film. Furthermore, its marketing budget was a lump sum of $100 million. Thus, the movie didn’t do well as to the budget required to create it. So, Disney’s Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time turned out as the most significant financial failure, resulting in its sequel rethinking.
Will Prince Of Persia 2 Ever Happen?
Sadly, considering the box office collection and the reviews it received, it hints that Prince Of Persia 2 wouldn’t be on the cards of the makers. It’s been ten years, and now Jake Gyllenhall has also lost his interest. Now, it’s unlikely that Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time will ever get its sequel. However, if the audience is willing to see a reboot, perhaps Disney might come up with it.
