Reasons Why Mask Girl Season 2 Should Not Return?

After the titular character’s death in the gritty and heinous first season of Mask Girl, fans were left on the edge of their seats. The K-drama is undoubtedly the most shocking series so far. It delves deeper into an individual’s obsession with living a happy life. With a twisting plotline and murder mystery on edge, Mask Girl Season 2 is hotly anticipated at this moment. However, the question of whether the series will return in another season after Kim Mo Mi, aka Mask Girl’s death arises.

The series’ gripping storyline has already won many hearts, and there’s no denying that. In fact, it performed incredibly well globally, causing fans to believe there’s room for another season. But will we get Mask Girl Season 2, especially after the first season neatly wrapped up the storylines? Here are all the possible reasons why we don’t need a Season 2.

Based on the Naver Webtoon of the same name, the K-drama focused on Kim Mo-Mi’s struggle to live a normal life. As a child, she had always dreamt of becoming a K-pop idol. However, she was rejected because of her average looks and ended up living a normal officer-goer life. Since she had a knack for dancing, Mo Mi started her live-streaming channel. Being insecure about her looks, she put a mask on. Despite receiving colossal fame, her life took a drastic turn when ill-fated events overtook her life.

Is Mask Girl Season 2 Renewed Yet?

Unfortunately, not! The first season aired on August 18, 2023, and it’s been almost a year since we last saw the K-drama. However, Netflix hasn’t yet made an official announcement. That doesn’t mean that Mask Girl didn’t perform well globally. In fact, the show has an incredible start and ending. In just the first three days of its debut, Mask Girl amassed 2.8 million views.

Netflix Global Top Ten

This roughly equates to 19,200,000 watch hours by subscribers. Not only this, the series also secured a second place on Netflix Global Top Ten. Mask Girl remained in the top ten for four consecutive weeks in 72 countries. The show remained in the top ten in South Korea for eight weeks. Well, it suggests that the series amassed praise from not only the global audience but also from its native audience.

The show has also been highly praised in countries like Hong Kong and Vietnam. However, Mask Girl failed to leave a lasting impression in the UK and the US. Though the streaming giant hasn’t yet released a statement regarding Mask Girl Season 2, it has already hinted at the fate of the show.

Netflix

Netflix has billed the seven episodes season as “limited.” This means the streaming giant has no plans for future development. While it has also hindered the chance of the series’ sophomore run, the story had its conclusive nature. That can also play a significant role in not exploring Mask Girl Season 2 in the future. Keep reading to know what made us say that.

Mask Girl Kdrama Ending Explained: Mo Mi’s Redemption Arc

Mo Mi’s life turns upside down after she gets involved in a series of murder cases. It all begins after the Mask Girl kills Handsome Monk, who tried to assault her. After this incident, she decides to start afresh by having plastic surgery to change her identity. However, things turn upside down when Mask Girl superfan and her colleague Ju Oh-Nam try to assault her.

Oh-Nam has feelings for Kim Mo Mi, but his action leaves her with no choice but to kill her. Later, with a new face, she starts living a new life as A-reum, a cabaret singer. There, she and her fellow singer, Kim Chun-ae, form an inseparable bond after Kim Mo Mi helps her kill Chun-ae’s abusive roommate, Bu-yong. Meanwhile, Oh-Nam’s overprotective mother, Kyung Ja, vows to torture Mo Mi to death to get revenge for her son’s death.

This leads her to start her investigation, and she eventually finds Mo Mi’s whereabouts with Chun-ae’s help. Her investigation leads her to the latter, who promises Kyung Ja to help her with her revenge. But in reality, Chun-ae informs Mo Mi about Kyung-Ja’s plan and decides to leave the town and start a new life. During this time, Mo Mi also confesses that she’s pregnant with Oh-Nam’s baby.

However, Kyung Ja enters the picture and shoots Chun-ae, but before she can kill Mo Mi, Chun-ae bludgeons Kyung Ja’s head. To escape the situation, Mo Mi dumps the bodies in the lake. But instead of running, Mo Mi turns herself into the police after giving birth to Mi Mo.

Mi Mo Lives A Miserable Life

After Kim Mo Mi leaves Mi Mo in her mother’s care, Mi Mo’s life becomes more twisted. Although Young Hee, Mo Mi’s mother, loves Mi Mo, her strict approach to parenting has made things vulnerable for the child. Since everyone has followed the Mask Girl case, her arrest has become the national news. This makes Mi Mo a hot topic, and everyone learns about her true identity, which leads to her being bullied by other students.

Since Ye-Chun knows about Mi Mo’s history, the latter believes that Ye-Chun is behind this and has betrayed her. In reality, Kyung-Ja, who is alive, has spread the info. Mi Mo then lashes out her anger at Ye-Chun. However, when her grandmother learns about her fight at school, she kicks her out of home.

With nowhere to go, Mi Mo finds solace in “Tteokbokki Granny,” who provides a helping hand and also shows kindness when others are bullying her. Surprisingly, that granny turns out to be Kyung-Ja. The latter has planned to kill Mi Mo so that Mo Mi can suffer the same pain that Kyung Ja faced years ago.

Kim Mo Mi Escapes Prison To Save Her Daughter

After years behind bars, Mask Girl learns that her daughter has been living a miserable life. She decides to escape prison to get back to her daughter and save her from all the cruelty. To make things work out, Mo Mi decides to help prison bully Eun Suk by donating her kidney to her daughter. This eventually makes Eun Suk feel indebted to Mo Mi and even saves her from the guards and the warden.

Amid this, Kim Mo Mi learns that Kyung Ja is still alive. It turns out that the latter has narrowly escaped death and had plastic surgery to let Mo Mi believe that she has killed Kyung Ja. However, Kyung Ja plans to kill Mi Mo, and she’s the one behind the spread of rumors about her and encourages her to fight her bullies.

After learning that Mi Mo has been kicked out of her school and grandmother’s house, Kim Mo Mi decides to save her daughter. On the day of the kidney transplant, Mo Mi convinces the guards to let her use the restroom. This allows her to escape the hospital, where she steals a car and heads toward Kyung-Ja’s house. Meanwhile, Young Hee has been desperately searching for Mi Mo with Ye-chun.

Showdown: Kyung Ja Kills Mo Mi

At Kyung Ja’s home, Mi Mo is unaware of the former’s plans. She thinks that at least someone treats her well, unaware that Kyung Ja has spiked her soup with a sleeping pill. The granny wishes to videotape the girl’s death. On her way to Kyung Ja’s, Young Hee calls the police. However, she fails to find her granddaughter, as Kyung Ja has hidden her in the basement.

Despite the granny’s attempt to kill Mi Mo, she faces an ill fate. Ye-Chun shows up and unties Mi Mo. However, when they are about to escape, Kyung Ja shows up and kills Young Hee in front of Mo Mi. During this fistfight, Kyung Ja also kills her greatest rival and is then killed by the cops.

After this encounter, Ye-chun’s family adopts Mi Mo, and all start living a happy life. She also finds a camcorder in her grandma’s belongings, which suggests that her mother always wanted to be a performer and loved dancing. She tears as she watches her mother want to be loved by everyone.

Do We Need Mask Girl Season 2?

As mentioned above, the first season has already wrapped up everyone’s storyline. With Mo Mi and Kyung Ja’s death, it doesn’t seem like there’s a chance for Mask Girl Season 2. In the end, Kyung Ja stabs Mo Mi to death, who was also shot to death by the cops. Mi Mo has started living a normal life with Ye-Chun’s parents.

However, there’s a chance that she won’t be in a good spot there. If the show gets a miraculous Season 2, there’s a chance that it might focus on Mi Mo, who has started admiring her mother. So, she might pick her mother’s mask to carry the legacy that her mom has left behind. This eventually draws negative attention, leaving Mi Mo to walk the same path as her mother.

Netflix

However, things are uncertain at this moment. Bringing Mask Girl Season 2 will only stretch the storyline, and re-exploring the same path will make things troublesome and tedious. Thus, it doesn’t seem like the series should return with another season. What do you think? Should there be Mask Girl Season 2? Comment below. This is all for now.
