Those About To Die Season 2: Roland Emmerich Wants A “Goodfather II”-Style Season 2

Peacock’s latest addition, Those About To Die, made a lasting impression in fans’ minds as it brought ancient Rome to life. There’s no denying that nothing is more legendary than ancient Rome and its chase for power. But the question arises: Will Those About To Die Season 2 exist? This particular question has turned many heads. But don’t fret.

The series showrunner Roland Emmerich revealed his plans for potential Season 2. Not only this, but he has also revealed that the series is envisioned as a long-running series. So, without further ado, let’s head to learn the show’s future.

Prime Video, Peacock

The historical drama is an adaptation of Daniel P. Mannix’s book, which tells the tales of the Roman Empire’s games and the politics surrounding the Emperor. It focuses on several ambitious residents who try their best to climb the social ladder. However, only Tenax and Domitian made their way. Since the series explored the events in 79 AD, it delved deeper into the gruesome battlefield, murder, and greed for power.

Is Those About To Die Season 2 Renewed?

Unfortunately, the show hasn’t been renewed for Season 2. Those About To Die debuted on July 18, 2024. Three months have passed, but nothing is known about the series renewal. It first debuted on Peacock in the U.S. Later, the show was premiered on Amazon Prime for international audiences. But it’s been three months, and neither Peacock nor Prime Video shared anything about Those About To Die Season 2.

This has left many to wonder whether there’s a possibility for Season 2. That’s because the renewal decision is based on the viewership vs cost. The show was made on a budget of $140 million, which was quite a huge amount. So, Prime Video and Peacock need to take this into consideration. As for the series viewership, Amazon Prime Video hasn’t yet revealed its viewership data.

However, Emmerich revealed that the series was the No. 1 in 31 countries. Meanwhile, Nielsen charts suggest that the show was at the No. 6 position with 399 million minutes of watch hours. This is a great indicator that the show should return with another run. Parrot Analytics later revealed that Those About To Die was Peacock’s No. 1 show for the week of Aug 16 – 22.

Although this hints at a possible Those About To Die Season 2, the show received mixed responses from the audience. It gained 48% on the Tomatometer and 64% on the Popcornmeter. As for IMDb, the show earned only 6.6 stars out of 10. Such a reception could affect the series’ fate. Prime Video has yet to renew Those About To Die, so let’s wait for the official announcement.

Those About To Die Is Envisioned As A Trilogy

While Prime Video has yet to renew Those About To Die Season 2, the creator Roland Emmerich shared that he always considered the series a long-running show. During San Diego Comic-Con, the showrunner stressed that Those About To Die is supposed to be a trilogy. He said they are currently focusing on the series stats and want to see whether it’s successful enough.

Emmerich added, “I only know the numbers from Amazon Prime International.” The show remained number one in 31 countries, which was a good sign. However, the showrunner was more into American stats. “I’m going to cross my fingers,” said Emmerich.

While Prime Video hasn’t yet shared the viewership count, the future of the series remains unclear. But this didn’t stop the showrunner from discussing his plans. He added that the trilogy has something to do with Tenax. He will learn why he has such a name and receive a chance to become Emperor.

Although Emmerich didn’t share much, he plans to conclude the story with Tenax learning about his origin at the series’ end. Roland Emmerich also asked his viewers to binge the new show as soon as possible. He asked them to watch it within two or three days, as it would greatly affect the series’ viewership. While the series creator is persistently looking to return, the streaming platform has yet to announce the fate of the series.

Roland Emmerich Hopes For A ‘Godfather II’-Esque Season 2

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the creator shared his plans for Those About To Die Season 2. Roland Emmerich said he hoped to do a little bit of what Godfather II did. In short, he wished to explore both a present timeline and a past timeline, just like 1974’s The Godfather Part II, which featured the rise of Vito Corelione (Robert De Niro) through flashbacks and also explored his son Michael Corelione (Al Pacino) story in the present day.

Prime Video, Peacock

Those About To Die Season 2 is supposed to explore The Year of Four Emperors, which took place ten years before the show’s main events. It would also include the most talked-about subject—Emperor Nero’s suicide and subsequent power battle among competing leaders, which ultimately led to Vespasian ruling Rome. This will bring some new characters to the table.

It will also focus on Domitian, who ended as the Emperor in Season 1 and was only 18 during the Year of Four Emperors. During that period, he faced several death-defying moments, which the creator was eager to explore. Emmerich also plans to hand over the operations responsibility of Those About To Die Season 2 to another filmmaker.

Prime Video, Peacock

So he could work on other projects. As of now, he’s working on another passion project: Lawrence in Arabia. As for Those About To Die Season 2, the showrunner hasn’t revealed whether they are in talks of another run. So it remains unclear when the series will return, especially since neither the sophomore run is in discussion nor is it in the development stage.

What Will Happen In Those About To Die Season 2?

In the first season finale, Domitian became the Emperor of Rome. So, Those About To Die Season 2 can begin where it left off. It might focus on Domitian’s struggle to rule the kingdom. He will face several challenges in the present-day timeline. Emmerich shared that he has plans to explore Domitian’s struggle to survive.

So, we can expect both young and old Domitian to deal with new problems to maintain a place in the world. The other cast members have also shared what they expect from Season 2. Gabriella Pession shared that she wanted to see her relationship with Cala. At the end of the first season, she established a relationship with Cala, and now she is eager to see how this will change everything.

Prime Video, Peacock

They are opposites in nature, so how the two women deal with the next challenges remains to be seen. Jojo Macari, who plays Domitian, also shared that his character will see some crazy stuff. There’s a chance that he might go evil and seek vengeance. However, there’s another possibility that he might be a nice Emperor and work on dealing with the challenges thrown at him.

On the other hand, Moe Hasim shared that his character Kwame might seek a break from everything. After being freed from prison cells, he might work on his little house or start a new life with a wife. As for Tenax, it is yet to be seen how his life changes after Domitian becomes a new king. It remains to be seen whether Cala and Tenax put their differences behind them. Tenax has turned into a monster, so how he deals with everything remains to be seen.
