Joe Goldberg is back in New York! This time, he’s ready to whet our appetite with more murders and manipulative looks. With four seasons revolving around Joe’s killing spree and desire to win someone, You Season 5 returns to its original territory with a clean record. Things are going to be more dramatic, and Penn Badgley hints that the fifth season will bring back an old character, creating problems for Joe. Who will be that person? Let’s find out!
The fourth season was epic as it played with the viewers’ minds. In the latest season, Joe started working as a professor in London to clean his identity. However, things turn dramatic when an anonymous killer starts killing Joe’s rich new friend group members and blames him for all the murders. As the season progresses, it focuses on his challenges to clear his name. But at the end of the season, it is revealed that the person behind all the murders was him only.
You Season 5 Is Back!
You dropped its fourth season in February 2023, and within a month, Netflix announced You Season 5. Well, there’s no denying that the show is one of the flagship series on the streaming platform. That’s why Netflix didn’t think twice about renewing the series for another season. The production committee confirmed that Sera Gamble, the showrunner for the first four seasons, will continue serving as an executive producer. Justin W. Lo and Michael Foley will serve as co-showrunners.
Even before Netflix’s announcement, Penn Badgley told IndieWire that he believed the show needed “another season.” The actor said that he feels like Joe needs to focus on what is coming to him. That’s because he has all the wealth and power, so there’s a chance that he can fall further. However, it isn’t up to him, and he doesn’t know where the story is going.
But if things are on him, he believes the show should return with another season to give his character a better conclusion. Badgley thinks Joe is responsible for everything and shouldn’t be left like this. The actor further added that if the show ended with the fourth season, it would be “somewhat satisfying.” But he thinks it’s better to show Joe’s fall in You Season 5, as it will be a satisfying conclusion for the series.

Creator Expressed Their Gratitude
After Netflix renewed You Season 5, showrunner Gamble said in a statement that she is grateful to the co-creator and all the creative team members for their support. She said, “I’m immensely grateful to co-creator and all-around genius Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, my friends at Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment.” The showrunner further thanked their partners at Netflix, and Warner Bros. Gamble even thanked the writers, directors, producers, cast, and crew for their support.
She is lucky to have Penn Badgely by her side and proud of the accomplishments they have received. Gamble is excited to watch and support the creative team as they bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to a twisted conclusion. Meanwhile, the series producers Sarah Schechter and Greg Berlanti said they intend to bring their ideas to Gamble for more years.
You Season 5: Production Status
Although the series was renewed for season 5 in March 2023, production didn’t begin in 2023 due to the Hollywood strikes. However, a year later, the fans were delighted with the pleasing news that filming for You Season 5 had begun. On March 25, 2024, Penn Badgley was photographed at Bleecker St. station. He wore a maroon button-up T-shirt with a black coat.
Fans also noticed a gold wedding band on his ring finger, suggesting Joe was back in New York City. The following month, Joe is seen with Charlotte Ritchie and a young boy, played by Frankie Demaio. While not much is known about this little boy’s character, it seems he’s Joe and Love’s son, Henry. This indicates that the fifth season will follow a time jump.
In addition, Badgley is also photographed with Madeline Brewer, who will play Bronte. They have plenty of scenes together, so her role may be important. While the filming started late, in mid-August, You announced that “it was a wrap.” Penn Badgley announced this big news on TikTok using the “demure” trend created by Jools Lebron (content creator).
Lebron talks about staying “mindful” of the trend, and Badgley used the same format to share his last day on set. The actor started the video carrying garment bags, saying, “See how I show up to work? Very demure, very mindful.” He said he didn’t do much when he was at work. “I’m very mindful,” Badgley continued. “Playing a romantic icon for five seasons, I’m very modest, I’m very mindful… You see my shirt? Showing the shoulders, not the boulders,” the actor concluded.
Who Will Be In You Season 5 Cast?
Without any doubt, it’s safe to say that Penn Badgley will continue leading You as Joe Goldberg. Since we have seen in the past few seasons that he usually finds himself in a new place among new people, it won’t be surprising if the same happens in You Season 5. In early March 2024, the production committee announced that The Handmaid’s Tale’s Madeline Brewer would join the show as Bronte.
Bronte is a free-spirited and enigmatic playwright who will work at Joe’s bookstore. Her backstory will give Joe nostalgia, forcing him to question everything he has done before. Besides her, Anna Camp and Griffin Matthews will join You Season 5 as the series regulars. Anna Camp will join as Joe’s twin sister-in-laws, Raegan and Maddie Lockwood.
Variety reported that Maddie is a thrice-divorced socialite who works as ‘vaguely PR’ and a manipulator. Meanwhile, Raegan is the cunning, cutthroat CFO of the family business Lockwood Corp. She only eyes the throne and doesn’t care much about people who come in between. As for Matthews, he will join You Season 5 as Teddy Lockwood, Joe’s brother-in-law.
Parks & Recreation’s Pete Ploszek, Station 19′s b, and Sunset Boulevard’s Tom Francis will also join the show’s fifth season. Ploszek will play a former football player and Raegan’s husband, Harrison. b will join as Phoenix and Francis as aspiring author Clayton. Natasha Behnam will join as Dominique. Baby Reindeer‘s Nava Mau will join Season 5 as Detective Marquez.
What Will Happen In You Season 5?
Gamble and Penn have already confirmed that things are going to be dramatic as Joe is back in New York, suggesting everything will be full circle now. The fourth season’s finale cleared everything when Joe revealed his murderous identity and past to his girlfriend Kate (Ritchie). Surprisingly, she accepted his past and vowed to protect him.
With Kate’s help, Joe returns to New York with a clean record. According to the new narrative, he survived a violent partner (Love Quinn) and now wants the world to accept him. With Kate by his side, Joe is untouchable and even confirms that continuing his killing spree will be easy. However, You Season 5 can turn challenging when Kate learns that Joe is behind her father’s murder.
Now that Joe is back in New York and part of the circle he used to hate, it seems like the storyline will take a new turn. On the other hand, there’s a possibility Nadia will return. Joe sent her behind bars for her boyfriend’s murder, which she hadn’t committed.
But there’s a chance that she will escape prison and return to take her revenge. This would be a perfect arc to conclude his storyline. Further, Gamble shared that Joe would face his worst enemy when someone from the past returned to mess with him. Apart from this, Marienne might return as well. Her story isn’t yet concluded, and it will be intriguing to see how Joe deals with everything.

Is You Season 5 The Last Season?
Sadly, yes! Badgley previously told British GQ that the series co-creator Greg Berlanti teased a few years ago how things would end. However, one thing is sure: The series will return with a grand finale. Meanwhile, Vice President of Scripted Series, Netflix US, and Canada Peter Friedlander said they are excited to return with You Season 5. Still, unfortunately, the season will be the last season of the series, marking the end of Joe’s journey.
You Season 5 Release Date
As of now, things remain unclear. That’s because there’s no concrete date to share about the You Season 5 release date. A month ago, the series announced, “It’s a wrap.” Filming for the fifth season is wrapped up, but the series is in post-production. That means it will take a few more months to wrap up everything. Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether Netflix will return with a split season like the fourth run. Nothing is known to date, but Season 5 might return in 2025. This is all for now.
