House of the Dragons is a prequel to Game of Thrones, which takes place 200 years before the events of its sequel series. The series is set during the peak of the Targaryen dynasty’s power when they had more than ten dragons under their control. However, things take a dramatic turn after the death of the king, leading to a devastating war of succession. During the height of the war, things turn more complex when King Viserys Targaryen’s daughter Rhaenyra enters the picture, shifting the narration of the series.
House Of The Dragon Season 3 Is Back
HBO’s House of the Dragon is undoubtedly the most amazing series, and since it’s the prequel to the highly popular Game of Thrones, fans have high hopes for it, and so does the network. That’s why HBO renewed the series for the third season in advance of its second season premiere. The series was a massive hit for the network. In fact, it enjoyed the biggest-ever premiere audience on its debut on both HBO and Max.
The first season amassed 29 million viewers per episode, which quickly led to the renewal of the second season just one week after its premiere. That’s why the network didn’t think twice about renewing the series for the next season. Francesca Orsi, HBO’s programming and drama series chief, said they couldn’t be more thrilled to continue with House of The Dragon.
He added that watching this team burn bright again for the third season will be intriguing. The series has been on winning streaks. However, the second season failed to impress the audience as much as the first season. The first season amassed 9.99 million viewers in the US, while the second season saw a 22% viewership decline.
Despite that, the network is optimistic that House Of The Dragon Season 3 will bring changes. It will undoubtedly create more changes as the show is set to explore the epic plot. In addition, the series showrunner is hopeful for the next run. The co-creator Ryan Condal said they wanted to satisfy fans with what they deserve, suggesting the third season will be epic and bigger than the first two runs.

When Will The Filming For House Of The Dragon Season 3 Begin?
Days before HBO renewed House Of The Dragon Season 3, co-showrunner Ryan Condal teased that the next season was already in production. He shared that the writers were working on the script, and it remained unclear when it could be completed. Unlike other series, House of the Dragon takes more time to finish the first phase of production. Principal photography will take almost five months to finish.
That means the series won’t start filming this year. In fact, Condal told IGN that the cast and crew could start filming for the third season “early-ish 2025.” This means the filming won’t conclude until August 2025. Well, it could be the earliest we can think of.
If you remember, a nine-month gap existed between the conclusion of the second season’s filming and its premiere. So, if the third season follows the same, the series won’t return soon. In addition, the post-production phase will also take more time as this season is going to be bigger than ever.
Will House Of The Dragon Season 3 Be Shorter?
In an interview, when asked whether the third season would be shorter just like the second season, Condal revealed he had no idea—well, the second season had eight episodes. However, the co-creator said they hadn’t discussed the number of episodes count with HBO. Condal added, “I would just anticipate the cadence of the show [House of The Dragon],” that the series will focus on the same perspective. It will continue to be the same as season 2. So, fans can expect that the third season will have eight episodes.

What To Expect From House Of The Dragon Season 3?
While little is known about the third season, showrunner Ryan Condal explained that this season will entirely focus on the battle. The second season didn’t treat the audience with “The Battle of the Gullet.” But no need to fret! The series showrunner has shared that season 3 will focus on that battle. In a press conference, he said they wanted to give the Gullet the most anticipated event.
They didn’t want to rush things and wanted to give the storyline the time and space it deserved. He added that he knew everybody wanted House of the Dragon to come every summer.
