His Dark Materials Season 4: EP Jane Tranter Teases A Spinoff Series

Since His Dark Materials is an adaptation of Philip Pullman’s fantasy novel series, many thought the show would end with the third season. That’s because Pullman’s trilogy was fully adapted. However, the series executive producer Jane Tranter shared they had plans to continue. So, will there be His Dark Materials Season 4? Well, Tranter has plans to brew another season or return with a spinoff series.

But will HBO and BBC One continue with the spinoff series plans? Many questions have been running back of people’s minds. But one thing is certain: viewers will soon receive positive news about His Dark Materials. The show is set in an alternate fictional world where Lyra, an orphan girl, becomes involved in the mystery surrounding a strange substance called Dust.

While she works on searching for a missing friend, her life takes a dark turn when she discovers about a series of kidnapping cases. That leads her to an alternative world, where she meets Will Parry, a teenager from the conventional world. As the story progresses, it focuses on Parry and Lyra’s journey to find the missing pieces of the puzzle, which answers all the questions related to Dust.

Is His Dark Materials Season 4 Happening?

His Dark Materials Season 3 hit the network in December 2022, leaving fans to wonder whether the series would return with another season. While many thought the show wouldn’t return after the third season, Tranter shared that she had plans to continue with His Dark Materials. She told Deadline back in 2022 that the original plan was to split the third novel, The Amber Spyglass, into two parts.

Unfortunately, they ended up with only one. She exclaimed, “You can’t always have what you want.” The third novel was right to be adapted into eight episodes. She was humble enough to get a chance to adapt everything correctly. Despite that, Tranter had plans to return.

HBO, BBC One

She wished to return with His Dark Materials Season 4 as there were more stories to be told. Although Pullman’s trilogy ended with The Amber Spyglass, he had written several short stories, which can be perfectly played in season 4. According to the Radio Times, the series was supposed to run for nine seasons.

However, during a panel at the Edinburgh International TV Festival, Tranter said it wouldn’t be right for the audience to continue the series for the fourth run. Although some would like the idea, since the series is an adaption of Pullman’s trilogy, it wouldn’t give justice to the novel series. So, it was best to conclude the series with the third season. Thus, it hinders the chance of His Dark Materials Season 4.

But His Dark Materials Season 4 Was Never Canceled

HBO and BBC One never canceled His Dark Materials Season 4. One thing to remember is the series ended at its natural conclusion. The show is based on Philip Pullman’s novel series, which only consisted of three book series. Each season of the book series was based on Pullman’s book. The first season was based on Northern Lights, aka The Golden Compass. Season 2 was an adaptation of The Subtle Knife.

HBO

Meanwhile, the third season was based on the last novel of the trilogy, The Amber Spyglass. Thus, the network ended His Dark Materials with the conclusion of the book trilogy. Once Will and Lyra’s story reached its natural conclusion, the show also said goodbye to the network.

However, there’s a chance that the show can return with more tales involving Lyra and Will. That’s because the third season finale ended with a note suggesting it isn’t the end of His Dark Materials. So, will there be His Dark Materials Season 4?

Will There Be More Of His Dark Materials?

Perhaps, yes! The third season finale ended with a title card, suggesting Lyra and Pan’s journey isn’t over yet. The note reads, “Lyra and Pan would go on to have a further great adventure…” This means the show can return to explore the duo’s journey as they explore new phenomena and creatures in the next installment. The show ended with the third season. However, the book series is still ongoing.

After finishing the trilogy His Dark Materials, author Philip Pullman returned to narrate more of Lyra’s adventure with several short stories. In fact, Pullman returned with a brand-new trilogy named The Book of Dust, which could serve as the foundation of His Dark Materials spinoff series.

HBO

However, the executive producer and network will have to wait. That’s because Pullman has only published two novels so far, La Belle Sauvage and The Secret Commonwealth. He is currently working on the third book. On October 3, 2022, Pullman told a fan on X that he was in the middle of completing the final chapter.

Pullman wrote, “I’m up to page 275.” Producers like Jane Tranter have to wait until he finishes his book. On the contrary, the author shared that it isn’t necessary that the new trilogy will be covered onscreen until the creative team reads the final pages. While Pullman has his own concerns, Tranter shared that this new trilogy can be adapted onscreen.

Jane Tranter Is Looking For A Spinoff Series

While Pullman’s third book has yet to be published, executive producer Jane Tranter is excited to adapt The Book of Dust. In 2020, she told the Radio Times that she might be open to telling the stories of Lyra as a baby. She said La Belle Sauvage focused on Asriel and Coulter’s backstory and the origin of Lyra. Meanwhile, The Secret Commonwealth focuses on the other aspects of the fantasy landscape.

HBO

Tranter revealed that she didn’t think there was the best book like The Secret Commonwealth, which focuses on the study of depression. Tranter added that she’s hopeful of adapting the trilogy and is waiting for Philip to finish his work. The executive producer added that she had high hopes for Philip and his works.

He always brings the best out of everything, and she is hopeful to return with the His Dark Materials spinoff series if she gets an opportunity. Well, it doesn’t seem like the network would refuse to return. His Dark Materials has remained one of the network’s flagship series. So, without a second thought, HBO and BBC One will return with its spinoff.

His Dark Materials Cast: Who Could Return For Season 4

The series focuses on an ensemble cast throughout its run. However, who else will return if the fourth season returns remains unclear. That’s because the show’s executive producer hasn’t yet shared any details about the next season. But whatever will be the case, it’s safe to say that Dafne Keen will return as Lyra Belacqua. Amir Wilson might join her as Will Parry.

HBO

While the details remain unclear, the show could continue by adapting the short stories that center on Lyra’s adventure. Since she meets new people throughout her journey, we can expect some new faces in His Dark Materials Season 4.
