With an idol falling in love with a college student, Doona! follows the story of love, aspiration, and separation. Yang Se Jong and Bae Suzy won their fans’ hearts with their amazing performances in Doona! While it’s been a year since fans last saw them as Lee Won-jun and Lee Doo-na, they can’t wait to see more of them in Doona! Season 2. But is it happening?
It’s been a year, and the audience is waiting for the official announcement with bated breath. As time flies, speculations are going around on the internet, suggesting the future of romantic drama. So, will it ever return with season 2? Here’s everything that you need to know.
South Korean Netflix Original romantic drama Doona! is an adaptation of the Korean webtoon of the same name. The series focuses on a highly popular girl group, Dream Sweet’s member Doo Na. Despite having everything, Doo Na suddenly leaves her group and starts living in the same share house as Won Jun, a college student. While both are unaware of their background and personalities, they become curious to know each other, embarking on a romantic journey.
Doona! Season 2: Has Netflix Renewed It Yet?
At the time of writing, Netflix hasn’t renewed the series for the second season. The series debuted in October 2023, and soon after its debut, it created an uproar in the Korean Entertainment industry. Well, why not? The series brought the highly popular director Lee Jeong Hyo back behind the camera. He is known for working on top-rated shows like Crash Landing on You, Life on Mars, and Romance is a Bonus Book.
No doubt, his direction has helped the series to flourish in a positive direction. Yet, the streaming giant hasn’t announced Doona! Season 2. Netflix typically focuses on the viewership vs. cost chart. Initially, the series reached 67 countries on the Global Top Ten. However, with time, the graph declined a bit. As of July 2024, Doona! reached the top ten TV in 43 countries for three weeks.
However, the show performed incredibly well in some other countries, staying in the top ten for over a month. These include Hong Kong (4 weeks), Indonesia (6 weeks), Peru (4 weeks), Philippines (4 weeks), Singapore (4 weeks), South Korea (5 weeks), Taiwan (4 weeks), Thailand (5 weeks), and Vietnam (6 weeks).
However, the K-drama didn’t make it to the United States’ top ten list, which might affect the series’ renewal. Doona! received positive ratings globally. It earned an 83% positive response on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.2 stars out of 10 on IMDb. This makes the series highly critically acclaimed. So, many believe it could return.
Also, Netflix has called the first nine episodes “season one” rather than “limited series.” Thus, it’s a sign that the show might get Doona! Season 2 in the future, as the streaming giant might be eyeing more than one outing. But the official announcement has yet to be made.
Do Doona! Ending Hints At Season 2?
Alert: Spoilers from the Do Doona Episode 9 Finale ahead.
Sadly, no! The K-drama had its conclusive ending with a proper beginning, middle, and end, leaving no room for Doona! Season 2. The first season ended on a bittersweet note when Won Jun and Doo Na separated. While the entire season focused on their blossoming romance, they ended their relationship in the end. Doo Na resumed her K-pop idol career, and sadly, her agency didn’t allow her to have a boyfriend.
That’s because they didn’t want negative PR for her and the girl group. Not to mention the agency wanted to avoid Doo Na’s zealous fans harassing or, worse, ruining Won Jun’s life if they learned about his involvement with Doo Na. So keeping all the things in mind, Doo Na’s agency made the strict rules that she couldn’t date anyone. Despite that, Doo Na did her best to see Won Jun, who officially called it quits.
That was because of Won Jun’s military enlistment. So, he needed to serve his mandatory two-year national service. Meanwhile, Doo Na became extremely busy with her career. Doo Na hadn’t given up on Won Jun. She tried her best to make their relationship work, but Won Jun didn’t want to deal with the heartbreak of being unable to be with her.
He eventually called it quits, and Doo Na realized they couldn’t be together when he never arrived while she waited in the subway. The series then shifted to flash forward. The former couple finally had their reunion when they had a catch-up with their friends. Won Jun was busy with his civil servant preparation, and Doo Na had become an extremely popular and successful K-pop idol.
Despite their reunion, they didn’t enter the relationship. However, this reunion helped Doo Na learned that Won Jun had feelings for her. She was upset and angry as he wasn’t honest about his feelings. Once he opened up, the pair gave each other a tender hug. In the final moment, Doo Na and Won Jun both were working in Japan. Despite being close, they failed to meet again. The show then ended, signifying that they both had moved on.
Do We Need Doona! Season 2?
As we know, the show delved into Doo Na and Won Jun’s love story. Despite their best efforts, their cruel fate created complications for them. In the end, although they both were working in Japan, Doo Na and Won Jun never met. She sensed that he was somewhere close to her, but she never got back to him despite her efforts.
Since the show has already hinted that nothing could ever happen between them, there’s no point in stretching the story in Doona! Season 2. If Netflix does return with another season, it will only complicate things. Fans have already witnessed the male and female leads to fight with their fate to be together. In the end, they even ended up walking on a separate path.
So, there’s no point in bringing Doona! Season 2 as it would only stretch the storyline. However, if the production team expects to bring another stellar cast with an interesting storyline, then we can expect that the show could return. But that won’t be the cast, considering the show is based on the titular character Doo Na. Thus, it doesn’t seem like there’s a need for a second season.
