The Resident Evil 2 Remake is among the most-beloved games present in the industry right now. The gameplay of the remake has slightly deviated, but its tone and mood remain mostly constant with its predecessor from PS1. The creators were thinking of cutting the plant monsters, also known as the Ivy Zombies, and most of the fans believed the remake became really better if they left it out.
Resident Evil 2 remake is a horror survival game. It is the remake of the 1998 game of the same name. Capcom developed and published both the versions of the game. The developers released this game on January 25, 2019, for Windows, Playstation 4, and Xbox One. And it got an enormous response and critical acclamation upon its release. It also got nominated for the ‘Game of the Year’ award. By March 2020, the game has sold over 6.5 million copies worldwide, and successfully outsell its original.
Resident Evil 2 Remake: New Ivy Zombies!
In the original game, players confronted wandering Ivies, horrible humanoid plants. They are the series of bio-weapons derived by Plant 43 with giant mouths and logging limbs. The design of these creatures was effective but also cartoonish. Therefore, Capcom decided to revise these creatures’ designs in Resident Evil 2 Remake and turned them into Ivy Zombies. Now, they look more like regular zombies with a plant wrap around their bodies. They are now scarier than before, and the vertical venus flytrap like a mouth made them a bit creepy too.
In 2018, the developers of this game planned to remove humanoid plants completely. They were worried about how will they feature a zombie plant in a more realistic atmosphere. But Kanda wanted these creatures in the remake. So they worked for about a year only thinking about how to modernize the creatures. And the final result is in front of everyone now in the form of Ivy Zombies. They are certainly scarier but still not fitting with the tone of the game.
Origin Of The Ivy Zombies!
Every single antagonist of the remake except for Mr. X and the Giant Alligator is in contrast to a mutated human or animal, sealed by blood, intestines, and exposed muscles. They all have their roots in the same source, Umbrella t-virus. Birkin injected the virus himself, and then the zombies caught it during its outbreak. The Ivy Zombies obstruct this consistency, as they’re a distinct type of zombie not produced by the virus directly, but by a parasitic plant originated from the t-Virus.
Why Does Resident Evil 2 Remake feel Better Without Them?
If we see those Ivy Zombies on their own, they made a great horror antagonist in any game. Their movement and sound design are enough to give chills to the players. And they are one of the most unsettling characters in Resident Evil 2 Remake. Their regenerative abilities can trouble any new players. However, their visuals seems little out of place as compared to the other monsters of this game. The remake consists of one hell of scary enemies, and then if you see a zombie wrapping in a plant, it feels a little odd. Some fans players believed that the old design would feel more suitable with this new environment of the game.
