The audience was so delved into the story that their wait for the sophomore installment was about to exceed the limit until HBO showed up with an update.

Is The Gilded Age Based On A True Story?
Despite the popularity of the HBO period drama, fans are still perplexed about whether The Gilded Age is inspired by a true story or not. Well, the series is not based on a true story and is completely fictional. The screenplay, written by Fellowes, consists of no true or real-life incidents. However, some characters are reported to represent certain realities.
Caroline Schermerhorn Astor, played by Donna Murphy, had prominent relevance in the 19th century. She was a socialite who became the wife of new money William Backhouse. In the series, the on-screen couple was estranged, and Caroline mostly appeared with Ward McAllister. The latter was essayed by Nathan Lane. The next on the list are the characters played by the lead actors, Bertha and George Russell. After going through the story, it seems like these two characters are apparently based on the lives of Alva and William K. Vanderbilt. Originally, Alva belonged to Atlanta and was determined to gain her social status back following the Civil War. On the other hand, it is possible that if Bertha resembles Alva, George could have been similar to William Vanderbilt.
